The summit is 2696 feet (822 m). The mountain supports a rich chaparral flora, including a number of endemics. Boulder-strewn slopes are composed of granodiorite containing reddish deposits of iron. Endemic plants on Iron Mt. grow on gabbro soils elsewhere in the county. Iron Mountain looking east from Highway 67. The mountain core is composed of batholithic, granodioritic rock. Some of the boulders are reddish from iron deposits and possibly from the formerly-overlying red Bedford Canyon formation. Soils on the mountain include decomposed granodiorite and iron rich soils derived from iron deposits in the fractures and perhaps remnants of the Bedford Canyon Formation. Curiously enough, Iron Mountain contains some of the same endemic plants that are found on gabbro soils.

For more info you can visit <a href="http://waynesword.palomar.edu/ironmo.htm", target = _blank>here

Date: Sunday February 20, 2005
Time: 8:00 AM
Place to Meet: Poway Road & Hwy 67

Direction: Take I-15, exit Poway Road to the east to Hwy 67. park you car on the shoulder of Hwy 67 (south of Poway Road) and enter to the trail.
