“Will you come in the reception with me?” asks a pregnant Sedigheh to the taxi driver that just took her to the hospital. It’s an innocent question, but in a country where unwed women can’t attain prenatal care, it is a last-ditch plea for help. And so the taxi driver, who already has a wife at home, is hailed to serve as a surrogate husband. The hours that follow are a gripping ethical thriller about the words a man can and can’t say in front of a hospital staff of women who have seen scenarios like this before.<br />

With a striking stylistic economy, director Reza Mirkarimi masterfully portrays the wavering tension between fear and compassion that erupts when we are hailed to empathize with every character in the film. –Brian Hu<br />
